Is Cabinet Resurfacing Worth It?

HomeBlogIs Cabinet Resurfacing Worth It?

If you are looking to give your kitchen a new look, then you may have considered cabinet resurfacing. For those who are unfamiliar with this practice, cabinet resurfacing refers to the process of removing the fronts of your cabinets, sanding them down, applying a new finish, and reassembling them while leaving the cabinet boxes intact.

Is Cabinet Resurfacing Worth It?

Although cabinet resurfacing costs less than a full cabinet replacement, our team at The Cabinet Guys strongly believes that it’s not a worthwhile investment in the long run. Here are a few key reasons why we recommend cabinet replacement over cabinet resurfacing:

  • Cabinet resurfacing only addresses cosmetic issues. Cabinet resurfacing is inherently limited because the process can only change the external appearance of your cabinets. Resurfacing your cabinets will leave the underlying structure, including the layout, the number of shelves, and the types of drawers, the same.
  • The process doesn’t enhance durability. Another reason why we advise against cabinet refacing is because the process does not do anything to improve the durability of your cabinets. In fact, it may make the cabinets less durable than before. While cabinet refacing is less expensive than a full cabinet replacement, it is still a significant investment for limited results. If you want to make your cabinets look great and last a long time, then we recommend having them replaced.
  • Cabinet resurfacing can’t fix structural problems. If your cabinets show signs of water damage or are becoming warped, then we encourage you to have them replaced with new ones, as resurfacing the existing cabinets will leave that damage unchanged.
